First of all, make sure that you have the right tools. This means that you should have haircutting scissors and a feathering comb at the very least. It also doesn’t hurt to have a pair of clippers on you.

You may also want to look into buying some haircutting ribbon also. This type of ribbon enables you to evenly cut your hair if you want a blunt cut. Keep in mind that you’ll probably need a buddy to either cut or hold the ribbon, however.

Next, you need to decide what kind of cut you want before you start. This can include pretty much anything from a blunt cut to a softer, lighter cut. This way you won't make any mistakes before you start cutting.

If you plan on putting layers in your hair but you want it to be a bit shorter, you need to do one of two things: First, you can use the feathering scissors in order to cut AND layer your hair.
